Photoroom vs Canva 2026: Best Cutouts, Worst Billing

By Johnathan Kwok · VibeDex Research

TL;DR

Photoroom is the better product tool; Canva is the safer company to pay. In our July 2026 tests, Photoroom delivered the single best free background-removal flow we have seen — a clean, full-resolution cutout with no signup at all — while Canva paywalls the same job behind Pro. But the trust picture inverts just as sharply: Photoroom carries the worst billing record in our platform data (caution verdict, high billing risk, a 1.4/5 Trustpilot rating, and a documented 2025 incident of retroactively changed pre-paid plan terms), while Canva holds a clean pass. If your work is product photos, use Photoroom — and pay it carefully. If your work is design, Canva was never really the question. Cutouts & Product Photos: Photoroom

We ran the same hard test image (flying hair, translucent fabric) through both platforms in July 2026. Photoroom processed it and let us download the full 2048×2048 transparent PNG without an account, a watermark, or a credit meter — with the best hair-strand preservation of every tool we tested (the full comparison, with the actual output files, is in our free photo editor test). Canva accepted the upload, then showed a Pro crown on the BG Remover and a £13/mo trial paywall when clicked.

Beyond cutouts, Photoroom is purpose-built for product imagery — AI backgrounds, product staging, virtual models — where Canva offers parts of the job (Mockups, Magic Edit) scattered across a design suite rather than a product-photo pipeline. For sellers producing listing images at volume, Photoroom is the specialist and it shows.

Everything Else Design: Canva

The reverse is equally lopsided. Templates, brand kits, documents, social formats, team workflows — Canva’s free editor exports clean, its free plan includes a monthly allowance of standard AI uses, and it even gives one genuinely free AI headshot per day (we generated one). Photoroom’s templates exist to make product listings, not brand systems. If your output is designs rather than product shots, this comparison ends here.

Trust: Read This Before Paying Photoroom

This is the sharpest contrast in our data. Canva: pass verdict — no support-complaint pattern, billing signal limited to standard auto-renewal caution. Photoroom: caution verdict with billing/cancellation risk rated high — a 1.4/5 Trustpilot rating with 81% one-star reviews in our pull, dominant complaint themes of unexpected billing after free trials and difficulty cancelling, customer support described as bot-only, and a documented November 2025 incident in which Photoroom retroactively changed the terms of pre-paid annual plans, removing features from existing paying customers. Its app-store ratings are excellent (4.7–4.8 across millions of mobile reviews), which is exactly the shape of a great product with a risky subscription operation. Pay monthly if you can, use a cancellable payment method, and calendar the renewal. Full data in our Photoroom review.

Price & the July 2026 Restructure

Photoroom restructured its plans shortly before we re-checked pricing on 10 July 2026: the lineup is now Pro (£5.99/mo billed yearly), Max (£20.99), Ultra (£60.99), and Enterprise — a wider spread than the old structure, aimed at catalog-scale sellers at the top end. Canva Pro remains £13/mo (or about £100/yr). At the entry tier Photoroom is cheaper for its specialty; if your Photoroom need is heavy batch work, the Max/Ultra tiers now price against dedicated product-photo budgets, not against Canva. Prices are GBP as geo-quoted to us and change often — check the live pages.

Which Should You Pick?

  • E-commerce sellers producing product images: Photoroom — it is the specialist, its free tier does real work, and the entry price is lower. Apply the billing precautions above.
  • Anyone whose output is designs, posts, or brand content: Canva — the breadth plus the clean trust record settles it.
  • Risk-averse buyers who need both jobs: Canva Pro as the paid subscription, plus Photoroom’s free no-signup cutouts on the side — you get the specialist’s best free feature without touching its billing.

FAQ

Is Photoroom or Canva better for removing backgrounds?

Photoroom, decisively. In our July 2026 test it returned a clean full-resolution cutout without even creating an account — the best free background-removal flow we tested anywhere. Canva’s BG Remover is Pro-only; clicking it on a free account opens a £13/mo trial paywall.

Is Photoroom safe to subscribe to?

Its trust record is the worst in our platform data: a caution verdict with billing/cancellation risk rated high, a 1.4/5 Trustpilot rating (81% one-star in our pull), and a documented November 2025 incident where terms of pre-paid annual plans were changed retroactively. The product is excellent; treat the subscription with care — cancellable payment method, calendar the renewal.

Which is better for an online store?

For product images themselves — cutouts, white backgrounds, staged scenes — Photoroom is purpose-built and its free tier does real work. For everything around the product image — listings graphics, social posts, brand kit — Canva. Many sellers use exactly that split.

Do Photoroom and Canva have free plans worth using?

Both, genuinely. Photoroom’s free tier includes standard-resolution background removal without signup and about 250 exports/month on core tools with an account. Canva’s free plan includes the full editor with clean exports, a monthly allowance of standard AI uses, and one free AI headshot a day. They cover different jobs, so the free tiers stack well together.
