TL;DR

Unlimited free clean AI video does not exist — the compute is too expensive — so the real question is who gives you the most clean seconds for free. We generated the same clip on each free tier on 11 July 2026. Adobe Firefly was the standout: a clean, watermark-free 720p clip on a renewing daily allowance, running Google’s Veo 3.1 Fast. VEED also delivered a clean 1080p clip (one per 50-credit refill). Both beat their reputations. Meanwhile Pixlr and Picsart could not make a single free video — their credits do not cover one generation — and Runway and Grok are not meaningfully free at all. For daily volume to practice on, Dreamina and Pixverse are the recurring free tiers that survived a ledger check on 1 September 2026 — Hailuo and Kling did not, and the corrections are below. We Tested It: Real Free Clips

Every “free AI video generator” roundup lists the same tools; almost none actually generate a video on the free tier and show you the file. We did. Same prompt — a golden retriever puppy running through a sunlit meadow — run on each free tier in our own browser on 11 July 2026. Here are the two that produced a clean, watermark-free clip for free. Play them.

Both clips are the actual files we downloaded from each free tier, frame-checked for watermarks. Notably, both platforms are commonly labelled “watermark traps” in other roundups — neither watermarked our free export. The catch is quantity, not watermarks: Firefly’s allowance renews daily; VEED’s 50 free credits buy exactly one mid-tier clip (its premium models, Google Veo 2 at 250 credits and Luma Ray at 120, are priced out of the free tier entirely).

The Ones That Gave Us Zero Free Video

Three platforms that market a “free AI video generator” could not produce a single clip on our free account — not because of a watermark, but because a free balance does not cover even one generation. This is the trap the word “free” hides, and it only shows up when you actually try.

Pixlr: its video generator routes to Seedance 2.0 Fast at 130 credits per clip, but a free account holds 10 credits. Zero free videos; clicking Generate opens a paywall.
Picsart: the AI video generator (a multi-model router for Veo 3.1, Kling, Seedance and Sora) shows “Subscribe to generate” on the free tier with a zero credit balance.
CapCut: now integrating ByteDance’s Seedance 2.5, but video generation is credit-gated and our free balance was spent — no free clip at zero credits, and free video exports carry the CapCut watermark once you do have credits.

Krea (Hailuo 2.3) also ran out of free daily credits during testing — its free tier is a small daily allowance that resets rather than a per-day practice budget. Leonardo offers 150 free daily tokens (Hailuo 2.3) and is a documented clean-tier option we are capturing a clip from next.

“Free” is the dominant modifier in AI-video search intent, but free video tiers are far stingier and more confusing than free image tiers — a single clip can cost as much compute as 30 images. So this article ranks by what the free plan actually delivers: real clips per day, max clip length, watermark, and resolution — not by output quality. For quality benchmarks, see our video-model leaderboard.

Free video tiers change monthly (Grok removed its free tier in March 2026; Google Flow moved to daily credits with Veo 3.1). Conversions below are approximate — verify on the live pricing page before relying on a number. Quotas and prices re-checked against vendor pages on 27 August 2026; hands-on clips are from the 11 July 2026 run. On 1 September 2026 we went further and read the credit ledger inside signed-in free accounts on Hailuo, Kling and Dreamina, which is how the Hailuo and Kling rows on this page came to differ from every other roundup.

What “free” actually means — credits converted to real clips

Raw credit numbers are meaningless across platforms — 66 credits on Kling, 80 on Pika, and 125 on Runway buy completely different amounts of video. The period matters even more than the number, and it is the field roundups get wrong most often. Normalised to real clips per period, the gap is stark: a genuinely daily tier like Pixverse gives you a clip every day, while Kling’s 66 credits arrive monthly and Runway’s “free” is ~25 seconds total, once.

Bottom line: daily-reset tiers are the only ones generous enough for real experimentation, but the list of them is shorter than it looks. Seedance via Dreamina, Pixverse, Adobe Firefly and Google Flow (about two Veo 3.1 Fast clips a day) reset daily. Kling does not, at 66 credits a month, and Hailuo does not reset at all. Monthly tiers (Luma 30/mo, Pika ~2–6/mo) are fine for a one-off. Runway, Grok and now Hailuo should not be on a “free” shortlist at all.

The three picks

Adobe Firefly — the one free clip we downloaded clean

Firefly is top of this list because it is the pick we can prove. On a free account it generated a 720p, 8-second clip using Google’s Veo 3.1 Fast, and the download was clean — we pulled the file and frame-checked it for watermarks rather than taking the pricing page’s word for it. You can watch that exact clip at the top of this page. The allowance is labelled “free daily generations” in-product and renews.

The honest gap. Adobe does not publish a number next to that daily allowance, and the UI does not show one, so we can tell you it renews daily but not exactly how many clips you get. We would rather say that than invent a figure.

When to choose: when the clip has to leave the platform clean — a client draft, a social post, anything where a watermark kills it.

Seedance (via Dreamina) — the #1 benchmarked model, free daily

ByteDance gives free credits through Dreamina, and the daily grant is real: “get bonus credits every day” is the only benefit the free plan lists on its own pricing panel, which we read on 1 September 2026 with a free account signed in. That is enough for roughly 1–3 short Seedance clips a day. Seedance 2.0 tops our blended video leaderboard, so this is the cheapest route to the current best-in-class model.

Two catches. The credits are pooled across image, video and every other Dreamina tool, so your real Seedance budget is smaller than the headline balance, and the allowance varies by region. Removing the Dreamina watermark is a paid feature, so free downloads carry one. Full Seedance 2.0 review.

Kling — the strongest model, but it is monthly, not daily

Almost every roundup, including our own until today, reports Kling as 66 free credits per day. It is per month. We read the ledger inside a signed-in free account on 1 September 2026: the single entry is labelled “Free monthly credits +66.00”, granted 1 September and expiring 2 October. Kling does advertise daily free credits, but that offer is scoped in its own promo to Individual Plan subscribers.

A 5-second clip costs roughly 10–35 credits depending on standard versus professional mode, so the honest figure is 1–6 clips a month. Free exports carry a watermark. Kling is still one of the best video models available, which is what you are trading the clip count for.

When to choose: when you need one or two genuinely polished clips and can wait a month for the next batch. Use standard mode to stretch the allowance.

Removed: Hailuo, which we used to rank first

Hailuo held the top slot on this page, and still holds it on most competing roundups, on the strength of a “roughly 10 generations a day” figure. We signed into a free account on 1 September 2026 to check it and found no daily grant at all. The credit ledger held one entry: a 200-credit welcome pack, valid three days. MiniMax’s own subscription terms say the same thing in plain language, that new users receive a one-time welcome package of free credits which expire three days after being granted, one package per user.

At 60 credits for a 5-second clip at 2K, which is what the composer charged us, 200 credits buy three clips in total. Not three a day. Three, and then the free tier is finished permanently. We watched the balance drop from 200 to 140 on the one generation we ran.

The watermark question is settled too, and not in Hailuo’s favour: the terms state that free users’ downloads include a watermark, and reserve clean exports for plans from $14.99/mo. The same terms grant content ownership only while on a paid plan, so free output carries no equivalent commercial-use grant. Hailuo remains a strong model and sits in the top three of our blended video benchmark. It is no longer a free one.

Honourable mentions

Pixverse — longest free clip length

Pixverse refills 60 credits a day — the platform’s own signed-out promo states “60, refresh daily”, which we confirmed on 1 September 2026 — enough for roughly one 5-second clip at 540p. It also allows the longest free duration (up to 8 seconds) among daily-reset platforms, useful when 5 seconds is too short to tell a story.

Luma — the free plan has gone quiet

Luma used to give 30 free clips a month. As of 1 September 2026 its pricing page lists no free plan at all: the entry tier is Plus at $30/month, and `lumalabs.ai/dream-machine` now redirects to the Luma app, where the product is presented as “Luma” rather than Dream Machine. There is still a “Try for free” button, so a trial may exist, but the allowance is no longer published. We have not yet confirmed inside a logged-in account what that button gives you, so treat the old 30-clips-a-month figure as withdrawn rather than replaced.

HeyGen — free avatar/talking-head video

A different category — avatar/spokesperson video, not text-to-scene. Free gives 3 videos/month at 1 minute, 720p, watermarked, no card. The best free option specifically for talking-head content.

Veo 3.1 (via Google Flow) — now daily credits

Google Flow now gives every Google account 50 Flow credits a day, no card. Veo 3.1 Fast costs 20 credits for a 4–8 second clip, so that is about two Fast clips or five Lite clips daily; the 100-credit Quality tier is never reachable on free because credits do not roll over, and 1080p upscaling is paid-only. The cheapest paid step is Google AI Plus at $4.99/month for 200 credits. This replaces the old monthly Veo 3 allowance.

“Free” that isn’t — read carefully

Runway — 125 one-time credits

Runway’s free plan is 125 credits once — roughly 10 seconds of Gen-4.5 video at 12 credits per second — and they never refresh; free accounts cannot buy top-ups either. It is a trial, not a free tier. Useful to test the product; useless as an ongoing free option.

Grok Imagine — the story changed

Grok Imagine removed free image and video generation on 19 March 2026, and we reported it as paid-only on that basis. xAI’s own product page now contradicts that: it lists text-to-video up to 15 seconds at 720p and says the product is “free to try on the web and in the apps”, with SuperGrok sold on higher limits rather than on access. No free-tier figure is published either way. We have not yet generated a video from a free account to settle it, so this row is marked unclear rather than given a number we cannot stand behind.

Two free routes that are not text-to-video generators

Both of these come up constantly when people search for free AI video with no watermark, and neither is a prompt-to-clip generator, so they sit outside the tables above. We have not run our fixture through either yet; the details below are from each vendor’s own documentation, checked on 1 September 2026.

Clipchamp — free 1080p export, no watermark

If your actual problem is the watermark rather than the generation, this is the cheapest way out. Microsoft’s Clipchamp publishes a free plan with video export up to 1080p and no watermark, plus AI subtitles, voiceover and silence removal. It does not create footage from a prompt. The working pattern is to generate clips on a daily-reset tier above, then cut, caption and export here for nothing. Premium features come through Microsoft 365 rather than a standalone plan.

Genmo Mochi 1 — open source, unlimited if you own the GPU

Self-hosted · documented

The only genuinely unlimited free option here, with the steepest entry price in hardware. Mochi 1 is released under Apache 2.0, so local generation carries no usage cap and no licence restriction on commercial work. The catch is the machine: Genmo’s own repository states it needs about 60GB of VRAM on a single GPU and recommends an H100, and the released model generates at 480p. Roundups that put this at 24GB are understating it by a wide margin. Free only if you already have the hardware or rent it by the hour.

What this article does not cover

Output-quality comparisons. Rankings reflect free-plan generosity, not quality. For quality, see the video-model leaderboard.
Exact credit-to-clip math. Cost per clip varies by model, resolution, and length; figures are approximate ranges from June 2026 pricing pages and reviews.
Hands-on watermark/commercial verification. Watermark behaviour and free commercial rights change often — verify on your first export and read the current ToS. Hailuo’s watermark is documented from MiniMax’s own terms rather than frame-checked by us: the test clip we spent 60 credits on was still queued when we stopped waiting after half an hour, so we have not yet inspected a downloaded Hailuo file. Free accounts get no queue priority, which is worth knowing before you spend one of your three clips.

Scope and dates. The hands-on clip tests at the top (Firefly, VEED, Pixlr, Picsart, CapCut, Krea) were run 11 July 2026 and the downloaded files were frame-checked. Prices and free-tier terms in the tables were re-checked against each vendor’s own pricing page on 27 August. On 1 September 2026 we additionally read the credit ledger inside signed-in free accounts on Hailuo, Kling and Dreamina, and MiniMax’s published subscription terms, which is the evidence behind the Hailuo and Kling corrections. Rows marked Unclear are ones where the vendor has stopped publishing a figure and we will not invent one. Is Runway free? Is Grok Imagine free?

Neither is meaningfully free for video. Runway’s free plan is 125 one-time credits — about 10 seconds of Gen-4.5 at 12 credits per second, with no refresh and no top-ups on the free plan, so it is effectively a trial. Grok Imagine removed its free video tier on 19 March 2026; image and video generation now require an X Premium or SuperGrok subscription.

Is there a free open-source AI video generator?

Yes, with a hardware bill. Genmo’s Mochi 1 is released under Apache 2.0, so running it locally is unlimited and commercially unrestricted. Genmo’s own repository states it needs about 60GB of VRAM on a single GPU and recommends an H100, and the released model outputs 480p, so it is free only if you already own or rent that hardware.
