Current Seedream Ladder

All three ByteDance Seedream generations sit in the current public Sonnet 4.6 leaderboard, which makes this one of the cleanest version-to-version comparisons we can run: same 50 prompts, same blind judge, three price points. The shape of the ladder matters more than the order — the 4.5-to-4.0 gap is 0.035 points (within noise), while the 4.0-to-3.0 gap is 0.182 points, the only real quality step in the family.

Is Seedream 4.5 Really Better Than 4.0?

Not by a margin you can bank on. The 0.035-point gap between Seedream 4.5 and 4.0 sits inside our benchmark's noise band, and our second-judge reliability study specifically flagged Seedream 4.5's exact score as judge-sensitive — a different strong judge moves it more than most models. What survives both judges is the tier structure: 4.5 and 4.0 belong to the same quality tier near the top of the leaderboard, and 3.0 belongs a tier below. That is why our recommendation is price-first between 4.5 and 4.0 rather than “newer is better.”
